Hi,

Anyone want walking onions? I received some last year on this board, and now I'm overrun! LOL I LOVE them, and am happy to be overrun by them... and now I'm ready to share the wealth. Takers?

And, by the way, anyone remember who gave them to me? I feel terrible I don't remember, and I'd love to be able to thank you personally! Smiler

Thanks,

Heather

Can you share a little about what "walking onions" are? (I'm a newbie and feel silly even asking.....). Thanks! (I live in Michigan zone ???...I know, I should probably be kicked out for not knowing my zone, but I soon will! I promise!)

Hi Diane! It's not a silly question--I didn't know what they were till last year when someone sent me some sets! But they are too cool:

They are called "walking" onions (also known as Egyptian onions if you want to google) because instead of setting flowers at the top of the stem, they set onion bulblets. As the bulblets develop, they get heavy and cause the stalk to bend over and plant the bulbs wherever it touches ground--so they "walk" around the garden.

They are tasty, attractive, and very unique. Also easy to grow and perfect for a kitchen garden. I have them around my patio.

Let me know if you'd like a few sets!

Heather

Hi Heather,

I'd like to try some of these interesting plants in the new garden. I'm preparing a bed for garlic and I believe these can be planted in the fall also so may tuck some in along with the garlic.

I can email you my info if you let me know where. Here's my email address:

(remove the spaces)

Thanks for the offer!

I am sending you an e-mail with my information, but I was wondering when I should plant them. Are they a biennial?
Thanks!

Hi wishing well,

I got your email. I'll be sending the sets out to all those who requested them at the same time, probably next weekend. You can plant them immediately. Mine produced bulblets in their first season--at least, some of them did--so I'm guessing they're either annual or perennial (I got mine this past Spring from another OGer so I haven't had them long enough to be sure). Anyway, they'll already have little sprouts sticking out the top when you get them (they're still connected to the mother plant right now), so best to put them in the ground right away. Just set them down and lightly cover them, and make sure they stay *somewhat* moist (but not wet) until they are established. Really, I just plunked mine out there, watered them in, and left them alone, and they've done famously.

Good luck, and look for the package next week or so.

Thanks,

Heather

Welllll, I'll just bet you got those from .....me!! LOL And I am sooo glad you are enjoying them as much as I do. And I've learned more - you can dig up the older bulbs as use them like regular onions (but they are somewhat strong), of course using the stems as green onions is my fave, and the bulblettes can be used in place of shallots. Total triple bonus!!

I'm in zone 5, and here in IL they go dormant in August because of the heat (me too - LOL)!But after that they are off and growing again!. I started freezing the 'green onion' part last year, and now I even have some during the winter. They held their color and their flavor. This year I'm going to try to grow some indoors during the winter. I'll let you know what happens.

I am so sorry, guys, I'm still working on this. I know it's a sorry excuse, but I'm working two jobs and trying to keep house and take care of a variety of other responsibilities, and I just haven't been out in the garden. I will try to get to it soon. So sorry to keep everyone waiting!!

Hey Wasrabbity I found a bunch that had not planted itself yet. I took it inside because I remembered you wanted some. Email me if you want them. My email is just my log in name with @comcast.net on the end.

Okay, here's the deal on the walking onions--I totally dropped the ball, guys. I left them in the garden too long, and when I went to collect them, they had all planted themselves. I discovered this a few days ago (this is my first year with a walking onion harvest, but I still should have been paying more attention), and am just now posting.

So, anyway, I'm really sorry, but don't have any to offer at present after all. However, please email me next Fall (and/or I'll post again), and I'll try to collect them earlier in the season to send out.

Sorry!

Heather
