We moved our horseradish to a separate bed last year (finally Roll Eyes), but are still digging up baby roots. These are from long estblished plants, but will need time to fully mature for harvest. Anyone want some? Fresh horseradish sauce beats store bought anyday.

I would love some horseradish - not sure if it will do well here in central south carolina.

Can I send you postage paid package?

Am not sure how it'll do in SC either, but you're welcome to try it.

DO NOT grow it in your regular garden 'cause it's invasive. Put somewhere it can multiply happily and you'll have fresh horsetadish root for years to come. These will need at least a year before harvesting, longer would be better. And trims/shavings will take too! Some of the roots we dug (too small to process) I put in a baggy of water on the kitchen counter and they have spouted up better than what in the ground.

Yes, a prepaid mailer is fine, although I can't accurately tell you the postage. Email me at wcjems@comcast.net for address.

I am interested. Can a 6" collar around the plant keep it contained? How deep do the roots go?

peapicker: no, a 6" collar isn't particularly useful (not that i guess it would particularly hurt). When I said invasive, I meant the roots. We're talking about roots that may start out twine thick but can become 1"+ with time. They can twist, bend, take stray paths, regardless of their nice upright, above ground leaves (2-3' tall)--which can be confused with dock (when weeding you often have to smell the root you've pulled, lol; plus horsey is more brittle). Once you've planted horseradish it's there forever and ever amen. You can move it, but unlikely will erradicate it from it's original spot in one year. We've dug roots over 1' long, and if so much as a tip breaks off you can see a plant sprout up in the future. It is a good companion plant, but it's still best isolated away from area where you might want to till or rotate crops. We've moved ours into a bricked area and have a lot less. If you use it, it's worth growing.

beansprout: did you email me? What I've told peapicker and gran applies. I won't hazard a guess on postage, but the roots are not huge and the package (padded mailer)shouldn't be much.

Thanks mainebird!

Jems, horseradish arrived intact. Got it yesterday. Thanks a bunch! How exactly do I plant it? Does it matter which end is up? Should it all be into the ground?

Plant it? Easy... Poke a hole in the ground, drop in the root, cover and water. Big Grin Really! Horseradish is like weeds: no maintenance. That's why I said it can get invasive and it's good if you can put it in a separate bed rather than in your garden per se. The roots can eventually become 12-15" long (or more probably) and easily an 1" (or more)in diameter. When you process them the larger diameter ones can be hard to slice--a good reason to harvest 3-4 year roots.

Let me know if you have problems. Smiler

Finally was able to log into OG again. Can't understand why I was having a problem - I didn't have to change my password or anything.

The horseradish is planted and now I will sit waiting, impatiently :-).

I have planted in several different sites in hopes that at least on of them will work out.
