My little roots have been in the fridge cuz I didn't know where to plant them and they look great!
I rent this place so I just decided to plant them in a big pot and maybe move them later. Sounds like they will do ok that way, considering they seem indestructible, right? |

Ackk! I take time for other things for a bit and chaos erupts.
Gran, if more than one "spot" works don't say you weren't warned about the consequences. Bean, the fridge?!!? Oh my... Well I hope they survive for you; if I had known you rented, I would've suggested you stick to an annual. What you might try is finding empty black shrub containers or 5 gallon buckets for every 2-3 roots. Is the renting long term or temporary? Maybe your landlord is a horseradish lover, LOL. |

yes, please I'd like some horseradish!
will email you my address. Kate |

So far two of my horseradish plants have been decimated by whatever awful creature is eating holes in all of my other plants. It waits until there is a very pretty leaf growing and then mows it down - I think rabbit meat.
I do have one in a raised 'box' that is, so far, doing O.K.. |

Kate, right now the garden is in and there's no more roots at present. Maybe in the future.

Rabbit meat. eh. I'm surprised anything is eating the greens. Are you sure it isn't insects? Not to worry; it's the roots that count anyway.

I too truly doubt rabbits are doing the damage. Horseradish leaves just aren't palatable to them.

Oh, yes, the fridge! It's a great place to keep things that are sprouting healthy & cool (in a baggie) til you're ready to plant!
I did have very large pots to use for now and things look great! Thanks again, Jems! I am just curious though...what critter might eat the leaves...anybody know? |

Yes, please tell me, so I can 'dispatch' it.

Rabbits, maybe? I'm thinking slugs, they love ours.
good gardening, good luck, DD |

granolaeeter, in mildlands SC could it be deer?? They browse more than graze but lots of unusual tasting greens seem to attract them--and SC has a HUGE population of deer.
You might try the old onion/garlic/hot pepper in the blender trick and coat them with that--was just discussing it on another topic and it seems to work with a LOT of pests. WileyR If you don't have wrinkles around your eyes, you haven't smiled enough. WileyR http://gardentoeathealthy.com/ |

Well I now have two FANTASTIC looking horseradish plants! Both are in a raised planter box that is that is lined with chicken wire.
We do have deer but they don't come where the box is - it sits only inches away from where electric wire protects my chickens. All of the veggies in that box are doing much better than in any other area ....Soooo.... I am moving my entire edible plant operation to a new area. Instead of hijacking this post on that subject I will start a new one. |
