I found a shrub in a cemetery last Summer, & took a few cuttings. 2 ended up rooting in water in a shaded location, after about 1 1/2 months. I planted them with lots of compost. I have yet to see if they made it through the Winter. I am not familiar with the quarrantine period for Canada, but I would be happy to mail some cuttings to you in Spring. These are white shrub type plants. They like a moist location, with full sun.

You asked for hints and tips--how about a reminder? Remember that in ideal conditions willows can get very large; Gran'pa planted one when my Mom was a little girl (around 50 years ago) and last I looked the tree was nearly 5' thick. So you'll have to give each tree a bit of room.

Oh, and I know someone who started a twisted willow from a cutting--that had been part of a florist's arrangement. Know anyone who is getting flowers soon? Or you could just go to a florist and see if he or she will sell you a few sprigs...

Good luck with your grove.

My Mom bought some PussyWIllow sprigs for a vase, & I took the pieces she cut off & stuck them into water with rooting hormone in a medium light window. A few weeks later, & I have roots on EVERY piece! They are only about 3 inches long apiece. I had not expected all of them to root - now to find a home for all of these babies once it becomes warm enough to plant them outdoors... Just a suggestion if you want to root them yourself for your grove. Julie

Twisted willow? Is that what I call a corkscrew willow? I started one form the florist arrangement too. It had come to the hospital when Dad had his stroke. Sixteen years later it's bigger than the shed I planted it next to.

Last year I checked at the florist for some curly willow, all they had were the dried ones for arrangements. If it would be to much trouble, I would like to get a couple of pieces to get a start from. We are fairly dry out here is Wyoming, but I do have a creek running thru the place.
