Hi everyone, Does anyone know a good way of getting ants out of the wormbox? It's so hot this time of year that the ants have gotten into my wormbox and are running around carrying their eggs so they seem to be nesting there. Susan
Ants can sometimes mean that conditions are too dry in the bin.
You can stop new ones from joining the party by putting the box in a trough of water - raise the box on blocks or something. The ants can't cross the "moat" to get to the castle.
Really, they aren't going to hurt anything, they're just an annoyance. If anything their little tunnels can help keep things aerated.

Thanks Suasoria, I wanted to use some of the worm castings for my house plants. I could add water but I didn't want to drown the worms. I like the moat idea. Maybe the worms can swim until the ants depart for drier land. Thanks for the suggestion! Susan
You can try raising the moisture level inside with lots of moist scraps, like really soft fruit. Or take a sponge and squeeze small amounts of water at a time.
The moat thing: Does your worm bin have holes on the bottom? Make sure you don't let water seep inside through the bottom.

It don't matter what you call me; as long as you call me in time for supper!
