I'm a new gardener and I just planted two small hydrangea plants in my front yard. Can I expect them to flower next year? And, if so, what do I need to do the soil to promote either deep purple or white blooms.
Thanks for your help!

Don't know. I'm sure you'll get an experienced answer soon enough. But, I've been researching flowering shrubs for my shadey front yard. Therefore, I know of this helpful web-site:

The more acid the soil, the darker the bloom. If you add acidic components, pine needles or other items ( coffee grounds?) the blooms will be blue or possibly purple.. Mine go blue

As for blooming next year, you might want to check on pruning. I dont know if they bloom on new growth or old
