I have been acclimating my tomato and Monastery Bells vine (aka cup and saucer vine) for almost two weeks. A couple of nights ago I left them outside overnight and otherwise they were sitting in full sun on the deck. Yesterday I left them in the shade and have brought them in at night the past few nights. The leaves of one of the Monastery bell vines is silver/white and curling up now and a few of the tomatoes are also. What has happened?

This has happened to me, also, several times over the years and best (only partially edumucated) guess is: Sun Scald. It doesn't show up right away. Maybe couple of days later. Happens when you leave new seedlings out in full sun too long, all at once. Instead of a gradual exposure; a little bit longer each day.

Doesn't happen to all plants. Maybe some leaves are particularly susceptible. Experience has taught me that tomatoes definitely fall into this category! :_|

Any other theories, anyone?

This was my guess, but I wanted someone else's opinion. Will it set the plants back at all or will they be ok?

They should grow just fine. Just that those leaves that are "bleached" will stay that way & may eventually fall off. No big deal! They'll push new, healthier growth.

And, buttercups, are your tomatoes planted in the shade or are they just hardening off there?
Guess I misunderstood :O If they've been hardening off in shade for all that time, I'd start right away gradually acclimating them to direct sun. Otherwise, they're apt to get a might spindly!!
