15 years ago in a different location in Missoula (MT) I grew broccoli from seed in the garden and had bowling-ball sized heads -- I filled the freezer with that which I couldn't give away or eat.
Now in a new house a few blocks away, I have never gotten more than a tennis ball sized head atop scrawny stalks. Something's different.
Check this little shrimp out. I planted 6" seedlings May 25th, photo taken July 10th. You can't see it well in this shot but the main stalk is maybe 1/2" in diameter.
magnafix, I don't know of anything online that lists that...possibly you could Google it. The book I just finished reading ("How to Grow More Vegetables" by John Jeavons) lists all of the cole crops I've just started as heavy feeders (broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, collards and cauliflower).
About broccoli, another reference book I have says to side-dress w/ fish emulsion 2-3 weeks after transplanting and do that monthly.
Hope this helps, OB
