This is my first time gardening properly and like most of you I am doing it for the healthy benefits of organic veggies with no chemicals. I have a concern though...some of the veggies and fruits we buy right now are grown conventionally, and I'm throwing these peels and kitchen scraps on my compost heap. Is this defeating the whole purpose of the garden? Am I just adding these pesticides and chemicals back into my garden? Or will they break down in time while the compost decomposes? Do you think that as long as I don't spray the veggies directly, they should be okay?
Thanks

Presumably you are washing and double-washing the produce before consumption, that'll go a long way. And when your compost gets going and healthy it'll counteract any trace residues, you'll be okay. Then ever afterward you'll be using your own cleanly-grown scraps!!!! yay!, so you're on your way.
