When judging the contest, don't we also take into account uniformity and blemish versus blemish-free? There has to be a list of things to account for. Smiler

Igmbt,

Sounds like you are in then, I'm guessing with Delicious, Right. Cool, on the 3½ pounds! Glad to hear from you. I thought this would be up your alley!

Hi Muddy feet,

boy, yep, you are busy. Glad your garden is doing so well! Wonderful news!

Big Zac's are very ugly, Hope someone grows a pretty one! I'd love to see a pretty one for once!

Just throwing this out there for discussion. How about we have the giant tomato contest, where all that is judged is the size.(combined height and diameter) Then have a second category, called people's choice. For those of us growing maters that aren't huge, but still very nice looking can enter pics to be judged on appearance, color, shape, etc. That way, more can participate and we all get to check out the pics and vote for our favorite tomato. We all love pics, right? Only the 3 judges will vote for the big one. The rest of us entrants will decide the people's choice. So, in order to vote for people's choice you need to enter something in either category. Heck, a perfect cherry tomato cluster could be the winner.Anybody having any thoughts about this, please speak up.We still have some time, don't we? Roll Eyes

Sounds good to me!

That way others can also see what different varieties are out there, and might find a new one that appeals to them.

So when you do the offical site next spring, make sure everyone adds what quality appeals to them most, and why they chose that tomato to be the prized one in their possession.

PS: No new Monsters up yet!

igmgt,

I remembered that! haha,

Maybe I'll do that with ya! You'll use walls of water though. I'll use plastic. It will give us something to compare. I'll use Big Beef and maybe I'll study trying something else. Maybe we should both use the same brand, to get a better comparision?

Let me know!

I will be potting up probably 2 times, in the time frame. How does that sound to you?

Now you gotta remember, friend, we share data, as we learn it! That's what this site is really about:

sharing information with each other, that did or did not work!

That's how we learn!

Glad to hear from you, by the way!

Hit me up on here, when you have a moment!

I'd love to be in the contest, that is if I can grow a large tomato. My tomatoes are usually small and diseased, lol. I'm going to try to do better on my tomatoes next year, so I'm in! Cool

Well I would like to be in IF I can figure out this picture thing. I just got a new camera phone so I am part of the modern world again but I have no idea how to get the pictures out and onto the computer. I am waiting for a cable I ordered because Verizon, of course, does not sell them since they want you to pay them for the download. I had three different people take pictures of my pomegranate and NONE of them ever emailed me the pictures. Well if you want something done you gotta do it yourself right?

I grew persimmon tomatoes last year and some were huge. I didn't like the taste though so I need to find something else.

Ellen,

Camera phones can be a pain to get pictures off of. UNLESS...You have a phone that is capable of email, then it's easy. Now, back to your phone. if you're like me, even getting the cable won't help, cause there is no software to make it work. There is a work around. IF, your phone has bluetooth, you can send it to your puter. Even if your puter doesn't have bluetooth. Just go and buy a bluetooth at walmart that will plug into your USB port. REMEMBER though that your PHONE MUST be bluetooth in order for this to work.

Oh yeah, something else I just thought of. Sometimes phones come with a slot for a card that you can save your pictures to and then just slap your card in your puter and move em' over.

I raised Brandywine for first time in my life and at least one was over two pounds and the rest quite huge. I'm not too crazy for flavor, however. Bottom line: Size is not important, flavor is. Also, it takes too long for Brandywine to mature; I'd rather grow moderate size tomatoes that I can use periodically and that taste great. Any recommendations? Thanks.

David, Congrats on winning that contest, And what a very nice mater. Is that a Gold Medal?

I did however became a little puzzled about the judging, looking at Trudys and Lauras. If you could please clear this up for me and also about that measuring devise, These can be found at Wallyworld?.....Thanks, Blane.

Thanks Blane. Yes, it was a Gold Medal. The measuring was a little confusing. It shouldn't have, if you think about it. The chart has 2 scales on it. Numbers when viewed from above and letters when viewed from the side. Basically everybody downloads the exact same chart, folds it on the line, puts it in the same clear shoebox bought from wally world or wherever. It just has to be the same item. Then you put the chart in the box, touching the left side. Set the tomato on it, touching the same side of the box and take a pic from straight above the mater. Let's say you got an 8. Then you take a pic from the side showing the height of the mater. Let's say it's an H. If your combined letter and number are higher than the rest, you win. The confusion began when some of the entrants didn't take a pic in the box. They got disqualified. I want to change how we do the pic thing. It was hard to get a good side shot in the box. All that really matters is that whatever the chart is up against is straight up and down. If you have any ideas how to make this work, I am open to suggestions. It was a drag to see the entrants' maters not count, but rules are rules.I felt bad for the poor gardeners that had their maters stolen and eaten by squirrels. Happened to more than one. Typically,a Gold Medal wouldn't have won, but I got lucky and took my pics in the box.
