oh2fly,

RE: Ambrosia, they are on page # 54.

I noticed this particular seed company borrowed my long term idea of melon presentation, by using the "melon ball" method.
My serving spin on this culinary bowl, is after you've cleaned the melon, then scoop out the heart of the melon with an ice cream scoop. You then insert this tasty scoop inside a triple scoop (hollowed out in the middle) of your favorite ice cream.
Afterwhich, as a topping, add what ever fresh berries are available out in your patch.
Since I serve this to my Zone (9) neighbors in 100 degree heat, on the 4'th of July, while they're setting of their firweorks, it's usualy topped with blueberrys/blackberrys and strawberrys.
My elderly neighbors don't like the noise of the fireworks anymore, but they really enjoy this homemade holiday desert!

Boy does that ever sound good. Only problem, the eating date will be labor day here. I am not nearly as warm as you are in the spring.

oh2fly,

The following tried/true techniques are for melons only!
(If)used successfully on your 'maters, they might grow to 3 (+) lbs.

(1) Red Kozy Koats,
(2) Rows are @ least 12" higher than the adjoining walkways,
(3) Etc...

Thanks Paul! Well, it just so happens I got my redwood boards today for the new garden beds and they are rough cut 2x12s! But my poor showing ambrosia last summer was also in a 12" high bed, but shaded in morning. So, it will be better anyway. My old barn shades my old garden late afternoons.New place is full sun.

Excuse me for butting in on this, but is Gordon Graham really the best reference to use considering he (according to the link provided)...
quote:
"uses a gallon Red Face of Miracle Gro every time he waters his plants
...to grow his Guinness-book winners and has become Miracle Gro's standard bearer and one of their most popular spokespersons? I've been absent for awhile, but this is still Organic Gardening Forums, isn't it? Wink

gardenz look like you are wrong again. Since he also showed how to do it organically in the 1995 og article and his book. but again you so single minded that you miss the other important tips.

How's that GG? Just reading and quoting from the link you provided:

quote:
* Feed your tomato plants every 7 to 10 days. Gordon uses 1 gallon of Miracle-Gro, mixed according to label directions, on each plant every time he waters.

Good point.
Maybe two contests:
organic (and)chemical?

This is the wrong place for any chemical fertilizer, especially MG. Our contest is for organic growers using only organic methods, period. Do we even have to discuss this? If anyone wants to start another contest allowing any kind of fertilizer, you are welcome to do so.What do you think our sponsor is going to think if we allow this? Surely there is no way to police this, but c'mon people really.

Yeah, I see where OG's Willi Evans wrote an article about growing large tomatoes and referenced Graham:
http://www.organicgardening.com/feature/0,7518,s1-5-19-634,00.html

And I think it was more a 'pamphlet' than a book that he wrote. Regardless, information is information no matter how concise. I don't fault him for that, certainly.

I'd still think even organic growing practices overall and Evans as well would nix the use of Miracle Gro at any stage of the plant's growth or Graham's career and affiliations.

Happy Growing and Happy New Year! Smiler
