Lisaann asked someone to start a thread and I just did. raspberry I only have 2 beds done. I planted Susanville too early last year. It got frost bit in December at 15" tall. So, I am waiting on that variety. Rocco,(96 cloves) and Northern White (84 cloves) are both in. Our tomatoes are still happening, as well as fall sugar snap peas, and a salad bed. So, I haven't been able to "steal" any extra beds yet. This weekend, I will find a spot or 3 to plant some more. I see Connie has planted some. Yahoo! You won't regret it. Who is next? MHG, I saw your post. Good to see you are still alive and kickin' Big Grin

Tomorrow! I promise! (although I think I am coming down with a cold btw cantlook Roll Eyes)
I have 6 wide rows to compost and till and as many garlic cloves as I have left will go in, along with shallots and rocambole (sand leek). I am hoping for 500 at least (did half that this year).
I would love to grow garlic as a main crop. There aren't any garlic growers/sellers around this state that I have found- just Wisconsin.

No longer a market virgin; looking forward to year two of being a professional grower.

I have nothing to plant. I only planted a small amount last year and shared too much around. I went to the local farm and they have none, can't get garlic anywhere. I will keep looking but everyone tells me I'm too late.

I planted 70 in my garden, don't know what the heck they are, all mixed up. Do know there is German Hardneck and Metichi. Since I'm not selling them I guess it doesn't matter!

I've started planting mine, but it is still so hot here I've been holding off, but will finish by the end of the month so they have enough growing time. I prechilled all my bulbs this time since last year the prechilled cloves are the only plants that made bulbs. The garlic will be planted in beds on 6" centers, except the Siberian, Metechi, and Silverwhite, which will be at 8". I planted about 150 bulbils, mostly Siberian, but some Bogatyr also.

There have been some new varities added this year to see what grows best here in the heat. (WM Purple is a hard neck sold at Wal-Mart only during the month of May. It only made small bulbs and rounds last year. All the plants fell over in Feb. during a heat wave. Just thought I'd give them 1 more try.) Here is what it looks like what I'll have when done planting.

Burgundy 40
Cuban Purple 32
Creole Red 48
Unknown Creole 13
Siberian 71
Guatemalan Ikeda 48
Metechi 7
Bogatyr 6
Inchelium Red 40
Red Toch 24
California Early 40
Silverwhite 36
Asian Tempest 6
Red Janice 10
Tuscan 9
Xian 10
WM Purple 40
= 480
~150Bulbils-Siberian & Bogatyr

I planted all mine already but have yet to mulch them. Everything sort of got put on hold when everyone in my family including myself got sick with the flu in the last 10 days. Not fun at all, but feeling better now.

Three varieties:
Music
Persian Star
Georgian Crystal

I got part of mine planted this afternoon...2 10' rows. At least I got that part done. I've still several bulbs to plant, but that'll have to wait till next week. California Late White. I've never planted garlic before, so I hope it works.

I can report, through my sobbing, that I planted all my garlic and shallots today. yawn
It took all day, two loads of compost, two arms with pulled muscles and one major back pain. It was very cold and windy and I didn't think it would take so long so I packed only a few snacks. Then when I finally made it home the electricity was out in my neighborhood and I had to shower in the dark and a train was stopped over the whole town and I had to pee. wah wah wah Frowner Next year I'll know it takes all day and I won't come home so incredibly cold, tired, sore and famished. Roll Eyes

I wasn't able to count the amount of everything but I can estimate 50 shallots, 65 purple glazer, 20 transylvania, 25 chinese pink, 100 chesnok red, 100 simonetti, 75 new softneck, 50 so called rocambole (I think that company is crazy- it looks like garlic to me and didn't seem to have a hardneck so I'm not sure what it was Confused) and about 125 unknown cloves that were remnants mixed together- maybe a little less.
I'm so glad it is in. The topping with compost and covering with straw is yet to do.

Just stopped 2 days ago at a local grower and got a bunch of German White, already separated into cloves to plant, but gotta finish preparing the new bed away from the Black Walnut Tree!

We have had phenomenal weather this week! In, or close to, the 60's every day so far, but I have been working too much and not had much time to work outside! Frowner

Started raining this afternoon, so I am hoping tomorrow afternoon will be better. Confused

I already posted this list on another forum, but I want to put it here too, and hear about everyone's plantings!

We upped our garlic plantings to 2 3'X29' beds, planted on 6" centers except 8" for elephant. Wish we had counted how many cloves for each variety (next year!) These are the varieties we planted:

Inchelium Red, Lorz Italian, Belarus, Pink Music, Music, Tzan, China Stripe, Polish Hardneck, Purple Glazer, German Stiffneck, Choparsky, Zemo (1 1/4 lb!), California Early, California Select and Elephant.

Minnie, I hear you on the pain and suffering, but it will all be worth it next year!

Peace

Gail

I planted on Oct. 11th, Chrysalis Purple, Georgian Crystal, Georgian Fire, German Extra Hardy, and some bulk bought from a local Mexican Grocer.

I have since receive Leningrad, Red Toch, Thermadrone and I need to get them into the ground this coming week.

Hello All,

I few weekends ago I planted 2/3 of my 4' x 16' new garlic bed. Most were white hard neckneck saved from last year plus 6 bulbs of Spanish Rojo from a local grower. I will plant the last 5 feet with white hard neck from another local grower. When I sat down to figure how much to plant, I was shocked to realize my extended family will need approx. 110 bulbs for personal use! Then I had to figure in how much I will need to save for planting stock in fall 2010 and came up with another figure, actual numbers are up at the WV farm and I'm not Frowner, but that is why I am aquiring more to get in next weekend. We are hoping to do some selling at the local farmers market , Lewisberg WV, next season so I wanted to have some extra. Every gardener/small farmer around here grows garlic.
