franeli,

thanks for the input....
I REALLY want a good crop, so think that the re-potting is probably a good idea.

So I went and measured with a ruler...

WHERE DO YOU GET A 4" DEEP POT?? Eeker

Even my 3.5" by 3.5" pots are only barely 3.5" deep. I have ONE true 4x4x4. Other than that, I have bigger pots, like over 6 inches and about that deep.

I have maybe 50 or 60 onions growing.

In the past I have usually planted the tiny bulbs from the feed store. So those are only labeled red, yellow, and white. No idea what they were. I tried Allisa Craig one year, they didn't do very well, but that was the year I moved.

This year is the first year I am trying from seed, and I ordered from Johnny's since they were the only catalog that listed the actual latitudes. It was interesting to see how many long-day ones actually only grow to latitude 45. I am at latitude 59. Because of that (some long-day onions listed to grow only up to latitude 45) I was scared to try day-neutral. Maybe they really only grow up to latitude 45 too!

And onions are OK here...you just have to be careful, help them to be quick.

Hi Alaskan. Here I perhaps can help. A half-gallon milk container ("landscape or portrait"). Or even a gallon one ("portrait view"). Trim to desired height with utility knife. Either paper or plastic will do. Punch holes in bottom and set on a tray for drainage.

alaskan, in the crop rotation thread, gardenz gave this link at the bottom of my post. Read this link inside it about onions. onions You are facing an uphill battle with onions from seeds. You may get away with it if you can raise your soil temp with a hoop cover or something. Otherwise, sets may be your best bet to harvest big onions

For those of you who are still mulling over when Pogo and I should put our onions out, I just checked the NDSU reporting station numbers on our average soil temps to date. Yesterday's bare turf number was ... 37. Pogo, if I'm close on your location, yours was around 34.

Brrrrrrrrrr.

Alaskan,

If you have a 6 inch pot, well fill it with 4 inches soil, or better yet 5 inches. Save soil when you dump pot to plant, since those roots won't fill the pot that much. And reuse for something else later.

Well, thought I would give a status update.

It froze up again yesterday (no more slush, turned into ice). And it started snowing last night. We have 4 inches this morning, and it just started snowing again.

Oh yeah! I live in Alaska! Yep, you betcha....

I should mention that those people on the 'flat' (a mere 1,200 feet lower than me) are starting spring. Bulbs are up and such. Me, 3 feet of solid rock hard snow, with a fluffy 4 inches on top. Cool

Hi Guys,

I had a huge surprise waiting for me when I got home from work today! Hubby was off and cleaned out the watergarden and set up the waterfalls. Woo Hoo!

And it was cold and foggy here all day, so it had to be miserable out there doing that and getting all the winter debri out of there and scrubbing it down and all that good stuff. Bless his heart.

It's not big, but darn, spring start up is rough. I was going to cover it last fall, but had plants from Greenish Thumb's Dad, and didn't think that would be wise.

Anyway, I have hostas on both sides of the Waterfall for 8 years this spring, and well, they need dug up and separated and put back in. Casper(Hairy's name haha) will be getting in my way, but I'm going to try and get that job done tomorrow after work.

I see nubbins out there, but I think alot of those hostas might have died off. I see other things popping up out there in that area too. The stinky plant is near the pond and Hubby only stomped one of them down. Hahahaha

So much to do and so cold to do it! Grrrr! Supposed to be better tomorrow!

Okay, here is a picture of hubby's work! Still alot to get done, but, boy, I am so happy he loves me enough to get this thing going today! Hahaha

I see everyone is around today, making posts!

Want to chitchat tonight, instead of tomorrow morning, when I guess we will all be busy outside?

Say 9:00pm eastern time? Or is that too late?

Give a yell!

MHG, I see you posted everywhere but here this morning! Why do I bother? Hahahahaahahahahah

Too late! Ha ha ha. We're still burning daylight at 8:00 on a Sat. But I might just be ready to pack it in by then anyway. Will check in with y'all if I can. Meanwhile, looks like we'll have a nice enough day today I can do some stuff outside. Up to 47 already and sunny. Better scramble!

...I wish I had had my camera at hand as I sat and drank my coffee this morning. Was looking out the new windows at the snow coming down when I noticed a Robin hopping around just a few feet away. It was a Kodak Moment when it leaned down and grabbed a night crawler from a bare spot while she was standing in fresh snow. Would have even been picturesque if the sun had been shining instead of a cold rainy drizzle......

Checked the garlic patch tonite and took a couple pictures that I'm hoping Dave will get posted for me when he gets a chance on the Spring Garlic thread.

My Big E. started sticking their heads up a couple days ago, and tonite Dave's Rocco started showing. That makes all varieties showing. My three beds of baby virgins are greened up nice, showing lots of healthy spring growth. Should be a good crop of tender scapes from them when the time comes.

The smoking lamp is lite, there's a race on the tube, and my coffee is irish'd up; think I'll just relax tonite. Smiler

Anybody else not seen hide nor hair of their garlic yet?

I checked back to last yr's thread and on April 9 I posted ... there's nada, zero, zip. On April 23 I first saw shoots. Now last spring was a little warmer than we've had so far. And definitely damper. In fact, we haven't had a really good rain since about the first of July (last year).

Apparently that 50% chance of rain they were forecasting for today isn't actually going to show up. So d'you think I should water them???
