Was a productive day; made it thru all the squash chasin' the resprouting weeds again. Went to town and bought the wife her OWN pair of weeding gloves like mine so I could have mine BACK. Left some freshly cut scapes with the local grocer and gave some to the lumberyard owner as he fancies himself a cook...both were thrilled. Been selling them at work this past week; $1/doz. I never tire of hearing "Wow!! That's real garlic !" after they taste them.

Steak an' taters on the grill tonite...diced virgin scapes on both.

Yukon Golds are blooming. Scapes are straightening. Bulbs and bulbils are swelling. Peas are still producing but dying back. Leeks are doing their thing, right next to the tomatoes, sweet bell peppers and egg plants. Squash is ready to run.

Took a time out long enough to look at the grapevines, we'll be making jelly again this year.

Snacked on mulberries as I passed by them today. Of course the birds looked at me like I was intruding on Their private picnic. Did ya know that catfish like mulberries too? Smiler

Garlics look like harvest will be closer to the end of July instead of the beginning as in the past. I blame it on all the wet weather we've had.

Soooo....pull up a stump and uncork your jugs......let the gatherin' begin ! Smiler

Okay, you guys, I waited till waaaaay after 10 o'clock. I didn't think there was a time difference between our zones...at least not a big one. So I shut down this thing and went to bed.

But you make me happy when you're so full of joy about what's growing well for you. Myself, I haven't been able to work outside yesterday and today. It rained quite a bit. So much so that it looked like part of my garden was going to be under water. However, it's draining rapidly so I'm not worried.

MHG, remember you advised me to get my garlic from a local grower? Well, I think I've found one who is friendly and will be able to accommodate me this year. I bought some of his garlic last year (to eat) and it was so good, and it lasted for a while too. I bought quite a bit and told him I wanted to plant it. I noticed the bulbs were small and he told me not to plant those ones but to go and see him in late September and he'd give me some to plant. So I'm thinking he keeps the largest ones to plant. Don't know what the name of it was but it was purple. I still don't know my garlics by name and I'm not even sure I know the difference between a hardneck and a softneck. I mean can you tell just by looking at them?

Dave, I see you kept busy enough. I'll be looking for your pictures on the other thread. Soon...perhaps in a week or so...you'll get to see a picture of my teepee! WoooooHooooo!

So what did I do since I couldn't work outside? Freakin' housework, that's what! No, there ain't no boredom around here, just work.

Ta for now!

Looks like I missed some chatter last night? Sorry Connie, MHG, and Dave. Had company and then hit the sack.

Sounds like you all were very busy. I dug more garlic today. Spicey red korean. Bent a hand trowel. Had to find another one. shoo! Those puppies were beasts to dig out of there, and split into 2 and 3 bulbs, with several cloves each. Frightening! And I know I planted one clove each, cuz I was very careful.

So MHG,

Catfish like mulberries? Cool

So we hit 500, guess we'll work on hitting a 1000 then.

Sounds like your scapes were a Big hit at work! Cool! I'm sure you will wow them with more of your crops very soon.

I re-evaluated the garlics again today.....I may be havesting the V.S. this next weekend (July 4th) after all....but the hardnecks are no were near ready yet.
Somethin' raided my hen house last nite, cleaned the eggs out from under a hen I had setting.
Started staking the tomatoes and peppers today.
Late afternoon rain cut short raking and mulching.
I'm ready for tomorrow to be Monday, I'll get some rest at work....lol

Hey all!

Wrong thread but this is the only one I have time to read tonight, so here goes...

Dave...You sent me some garlic last year & I think they were all hardnecks, but...I saw some scapes forming the other day & I think that we are supposed to cut them at some point to get bigger bulbs, but I don't remember when to cut them...when the scapes start to grow & curl down, or before or after that point?

I am too tired to look back at all the garlic threads & info right now.
Thanks for any info!

Hi Vicki, cut the scapes when they are curling down if you want to eat some. If you want to watch them stand up and seed, then leave a couple alone. The idea is to get the scape off before the bulb's energy goes into it. You want the energy going into building up the bulb's size.

Rocco is making a respectable showing. Scapes are still coiled.I haven't checked on bulb size, it will be what it will be.
V.S. is still schedualed to start coming out of the ground this weekend. Calling for severe storms late tomorrow and tomorrow nite, so alot will depend on how wet it still is come Friday nite as to whether we start digging or not. They aren't so far along that I can't wait a day or two to let things dry up a little should it rain hard. A muddy harvest is just tons more work to bring in and get market-ready.
Hen house is still being scoped in hopes of catching the offending perpetrator.

Loped the bulbils off the Big E.s tonite, they were just starting to burst. Have them drying now for my Pearl Garlic.
The rest of the hardnecks still are just starting to harden off, some varieties are still in a tight coil state. I may finally get a season where everything isn't entering the prime harvest window at the same time.
Finished driving the steel posts to run my wire on to support the almost 400' of tomato rows tonite.

Leeks are almost ready to start havesting for sale. Potatoes are blooming quite nicely. Onions are showing their shoulders, so I know they are bulking up. Same with the beets and carrots. The winter squashes have started to run. Retail pricing for them is up almost 250% over last year at this time, so I'm crossing my fingers not to get a hail storm in the next couple three weeks until they have rooted their runners. Peas are almost done.

One nice thing about all the rain we had and it's timing - it eliminated much of the spring insect damage here.
