There's a reason why people who live in the country lock their car doors in the summer.

To prevent Random Acts of Zucchini, where you return to find various summer squashes piled on the passenger seat.

If they are vining types, you often can grow them up a trellis or netting. I have limited space, so most of my squash (and beans and peas) are grown up the side of my garage on a net. I also do the same with my cukes on trellises.

That bed is WAY too tiny for any type of squash - even bush types would outgrow it.

Next time around, read up a bit on squash & how much space they take up.

Thanks to all!

Yes, I ordered a book about them from the library. Too bad my other stuff doesn't grow as well as squash!

allenwrench,

Growing up is the way to go with squash. This is the best picture I have right now, but it shows a fence section wired to two posts and small squash plants on each end that I would help train around the fence to keep them off the ground. (That's a cucumber plant climbing a few small tomato cages in the lower right foreground)

This one shows that they do grow and hold on until harvest. Great space saver, but be prepared to train and argue with it. It still likes to creep all over.

There's a yellow squash sitting on my stove right now. 2 feet long, 7" diameter. It was hiding under the leaves. Eeker

Muddy knees David! Compost is my friend. Every day I enroll in gardening school. Some days it feels like kindergarten!

Daisy - your climbing squash look nice 'n healthy. I built a frame for them to climb this year (I had a problem previously in them taking over the other veggies) which seemed to work well until they were devastated by vine borers. How do you deal w/ them? On a trellis, you can't bury the vines.
