.....bummer, Bill -

so let's put some positive value to your misfortune; Tell us the state of the bulbs that were laid bare. How was the health of your roots? Had your bulbs started to swell yet?

Hey, is it almost time for our harvest thread? I have questions...

Would it be disastrous if I harvested too early? Do the bulbs just get bigger from now on? I have "california late white" garlic, a soft neck I think, and I'm supposed to harvest in July/August.
I pulled one up yesterday, it looked ok, tasted great. And I'm thinking if I harvested now, I could use the space for sweet potato slips. What do ya think?

You know what they say about a picture's worth? It would show us how far the garlic is and I am pretty sure you will get a good answer after.

Muddyfeet,

Can't wait for the pics. Moorehaven calls that a teaching tool! I agree!

Moorehaven,

I know you are down, When you get back up, Let's start the "Garlic Round UP" thread.

I guess there is no need in waiting till June 10th. Okay Typing and thinking. I'll start it tonight.

God, I hope you have that new screen by tomorrow!

Questions and good times and pics are on the way! My belly already has butterflys, just anticipating the new and last Garlic thread!

I can't wait. This is what it was all about last Autumn when I started the Garlic grower list. Seems like yesterday now!

That thread, and the winter and spring updates kept themselves in the limelight, because we are growing as a team. Made it all that much more fun.

Okay, I'm bawling now, gotta run!

Ok, here is some pictures of my garlic bed now, question...can I harvest now? This is "California Late White Garlic" that 'should' be harvested in another month or so. Will it increase in size if I leave it?

Oh and Lisa, thanks for starting this garlic meeting place...I would not have even planted this bed it it were not for this thread! I have learned so much, and after tasting my own homegrown, I am now another garlichead! This is so cool.
Dry your eyes and give yourself a pat on the back.

I harvested 2 gallon size ziplocs full of scapes today from my Osage Garlic. I planted it last spring, too late to harvest last summer, so I didn't get scapes last year from it.
We have had rain here for 23 days out of the last 30. I want to wait until things dry out before I try harvesting the garlic.
I look forward to the continuation of the garlic eSCAPEades!

Until MHG shows up, I will take a stab at what I see. Your leaves are still pretty green. So, from what I have been told, you are still a few weeks before it is harvest time. Is this bed shaded? If so, how many hours a day? Garlic likes full sun. I don't know how shade affects it. Hope this is of some help.

I agree...the leaves are supposed to be turning yellow when harvest time approaches, from what I've read/learned.

Your pics are great, muddyfeet! Big Grin

I think it was recommended that about 1/3 of the leaves be yellowing/dying, before harvest, right, guys? Confused

My hard neck elephant garlic is blooming now. I ususally pull them when the blossom gets all the way out. I pulled 2-3 last week because I couldn't wait to have fresh garlic.

Hello All,

I found your forum when looking for some information on growing garlic and must say that it has been most informative and entertaining.

I have just started growing, well lets make that trying to grow garlic this year. The husband and I were a little impatient and thought to try a spring planting and then plant again in the fall. So far the experience has been anything but wonderful.

I was just wondering if there was anyone who had experience growing garlic in Canada? We live in Ottawa (Zone 4-5)? Any tips that people have for growing garlic here would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome to the funny farm! Plenty of characters here that also garden now and then. If you give us some details, our crack garlic CSI team can help you. Things like what is your garden bed like? Pure clay? deeply dug? brand new soil? When did you plant? How cold was it? Fertilizer, compost? What kind of garlic? BTW, what happened to it?
