Well, because of a move that was supposed to happen the first week of June, and is now happening the last week of August, I didn't get anything planted or anything harvested this summer. Is there anything I can do to make up for lost time? My new home will be in Spokane, WA, which I think is either zone 6a or 5b (anyone know??). I am inheriting some kind of garden, but it looks pretty overgrown, and I don't think there are any veggies in there. My goal over the next year is to be growing most of our own food... what suggestions do you have for getting some harvest put away for winter?
You could put in some fall crops like peas, chard, carrots, kale, spinach, lettuce .... I'm sure others have more ideas. I'm here in zone 5 and that's what I've put in. This is my first time doing a fall planting, so we'll see how it goes. I've followed the book though ... don't know if it will work, but am keeping a spreadsheet to keep track how long it takes for these crops to adequately mature in my location.
Welcome to Spokane! Where are you moving from? I believe this is zone 5, not sure if a or b. To be safe I make sure all my ornamentals are hardy to at least zone 5 as the winters here can be so crazy. Of course, if you are living right in town, you might be able to getaway with some slightly less cold hardy plants. If you're able to get some veg planting done yet this year, I suggest the use of season extenders such as cloches and other covers--my personal favorite is old sheets--to extend the growing season. If you're interested, I can give you my e-mail--I may have some stuff ready for division next year, and some resources for obtaining pesticide free perennials. Also the farmer's market downtown at 2nd and Browne (open Wed and Sat) is mostly certified organic produce if you need more quantity for canning/freezing.

Thanks, Jeanna! I'm moving from another zone 5... northern Indiana. I used to live in Spokane, but I didn't have a house and didn't garden then, so it's all new to me. I'm living way out on the state line, but I do remember the farmer's market. I don't know if I'll be able to do cloches and stuff this year, after the move I will be sooo broke! I'm hoping to make friends with the neighbors quickly so I can get some veggies and plant starts!
