Hi folks! My neighbor has a huge walnut tree which sheds copious leaves onto my property. I planned to use the leaves as mulch and compost additive, but my neighbor warned me against it, saying that walnut leaves are too acidic. Does anyone have advice on how to manage these walnut leaves?

Walnut leaves have a chemical called jugalone which is a great natural herbicide. Have you noticed that under the walnut tree in question not much grows? Use the leaves as a mulch or in your composyt and you will have the same effect on your garden.

if you really need to use the leaves perhaps putting them down in places where you no0 longer want grass would be effective.

Fabulous information. Thank you. There is a black walnut tree outside my office and there are parts of my garden I would like to "stop growing". My shoulder and elbow are achin a bit this year, so digging may be difficult. It may be easier to secure some shredded walnut leaves in the area I'd like to stop the growing for a season or two! Then, next year, I should be good to go in cleaning out the spot, replenishing with compost and start the growing. Thanks.
