I've had very bad luck with some bush and pole beans this year. First of all, they were eaten pretty badly by some kind of bug...I'm not sure exactly what. Most of them never got their second set of leaves, the middle part where the new growth comes out just became a "stub". Now, a few of my scarlet runner beans that survived all of this are actually starting to flower..I can barely believe it. So I thought those plants were doing good, but no.....now instead of the flowers forming beans, the flowers just die and fall right off the stem . What could possibly be causing this ???? I'm so frustrated. I've grown beans the last two years and I've never had any troubles. My garden is quite a bit bigger now though than it used to be. Somebody please help me!!!
If the eaten leaves were skeletonized, it was Mexican bean beetles. If big holes were chewed or entire leaves eaten, it was probably some type of caterpillar or slug (slugs eat holes in my beans).
As for the flowers drying up, my guess is that it's too hot. Lots of vegetables won't set fruit when it's above 85 or 90 degrees. When it cools off, they'll start flowering and forming pods.
