Hi! I'm 30mi south of Miami. Raised beds I hear are best in this sandy soil, or if you have the ground space, amend the soil with a lot of organic matter. Try bagged compost and potting soil to start with, just make sure it doesn't have chemical fertilizers in it. Or look locally and see if there is a sod or nursery supply company that can deliver a small truckload of good "black dirt". Check with them to make sure they aren't selling you some recycled "nursery mix". This happened to me once, I got this dirt that had plant labels and plastic debris in it. You can bet it had all kinds of pesticides and fungicides in it, I was so mad!
Check with your local Cooperative Extension for a copy of a vegetable planting guide. This will tell you what time of year to plant what. Like down here, the tomato and pepper seeds can be planted from August to March. Since you are way north of me, it might be slightly different. But, go ahead and plant tomatoes, peppers, eggplants, corn, lettuce, peas, carrots, herbs, scallions, chives...and as long as you are not having nights cooler than 60 degrees, you can plant cukes, melons, beans, squash.
Good luck and have fun! You are going to have a lifetime hobby. Also, get yourself some good gardening books from the Rodale company on this OG site, where you can learn about composting, etc. This is something I'm learning about myself. We really need to build up this Florida soil! I've been gardening in containers for a few years.
