I planted wild seeds in my garden a couple of months ago. Now there is growth some about a foot out of the ground. can I mulch over the new growth or will this destroy or kill them. I didn't know how important mulching was. this is my first garden. Now that it is getting hot out again my soil is drying quickly. I live in s. fl zone 10. Any suggestions?

Hi, Antje. When you say mulch "over" your plants....you don't mean "pile the mulch on top of them", do you? Cause, uh, ayup that'd just about kill em! ]Smiler What you wanna do is "surround" the plants with mulch. Newspapers, grass clippings, composted leaf mold(my personal fav), shredded cedar shavings, cocoa hulls....whatever...as long as air and water can get through.

But, if you "scattered" the seeds (as in wildflower meadow type deal) then your best bet is mulching with something light and airy (that you can "scatter"). Like the grass clippings or finely shredded leaf mold, or compost. And if they're planted real close together, you might have to thin them out.
Then, again......if they're really, really, really close together....they might actually serve as their own mulch!!!B-)

If you're concerned about the plants getting too tall, you could always try cutting/pinching them back, which would provide the additional bonus of promoting new growth/buds and bushing them up! Smiler
Good luck!
