Hi, Antje. When you say mulch "over" your plants....you don't mean "pile the mulch on top of them", do you? Cause, uh, ayup that'd just about kill em! ]

What you wanna do is "surround" the plants with mulch. Newspapers, grass clippings, composted leaf mold(my personal fav), shredded cedar shavings, cocoa hulls....whatever...as long as air and water can get through.
But, if you "scattered" the seeds (as in wildflower meadow type deal) then your best bet is mulching with something light and airy (that you can "scatter"). Like the grass clippings or finely shredded leaf mold, or compost. And if they're planted
real close together, you might have to thin them out.
Then, again......if they're
really, really, really close together....they might actually serve as their own mulch!!!B-)
If you're concerned about the plants getting too tall, you could always try cutting/pinching them back, which would provide the additional bonus of promoting new growth/buds and bushing them up!

Good luck!
