Hello All,

I managed to harvest six beautiful tomatoes. The skins were flawless. They were perfect tomatoes from various plants.

Now my tomatoes are just scary. What happened to create these scars and deep holes? The tomatoes are still nice as they are green/orange. As they begin to turn red they are becoming destroyed.

~ ~ hmmm... ok, I wanted to attach a photo, but I'm not permitted. Does anyone know how I can change that? Apparently, I have permission to do everything but send a photo.

Thanks so much,
Kate

Kate, my tomatoes sound like yours. Once they start to turn red they crack and get really ugly. Start a "flickr" account, add your pictures and it will give you a "url" for each picture. They you can add that url from within the menus on these postings.

Hi Kate,

You don't have your zone listed, so I'll speculate that the tomatoes are experiencing either

1) Inconsistent watering
2) Temperature swings
and / or
3) Insect damage (slugs perhaps)

Kate, many of us use one of the free online photo hosting services like photobucket. Or look here for more info on posting photos here.

Hi Pasque,

Thanks for your advice. I'm in zone 6.

I have been diligent with my watering schedule so I know that isn't a factor.

It could be the fluctuating weather. June & July were very wet and cool. August was warm, but not hot. September has been in the high 80s. I think the plants are confused!

I don't think it's slugs. I found a few on the leaves of green beans. I picked them off and never found them again. That damage was minimal... a few chewed leaves. If slugs are the culprits for the tomatoes, then those buggers do some serious damage!

could be sun scald, I have some, too. Try picking them before they ripen fully and ripening on a window sill (north facing).
