I have had a terrible time with Mexican bean beetles the last two years. So this year I was contemplating row covers (if I go with a bush bean obviously). I saw row covers for sale at the local sell it all store, but I couldn't help but feel like I could make some myself for less. Does anyone have any suggestions what material is best? Also are they something you can use all summer or would it get too hot in mid summer? The row cover at the store had no type of frame, it would seem like you would want some sort of frame to keep it from resting directly on the plants. I appreciate any input.

Row covers that I purchase don't come with frames. They are also made for different uses. Some ar heavy for protection from frost, some are lighter. The thing about beans or any other veggies that must be pollinated, the bees must get to the plants, so I can't see how you could use them on beans. I have bean beetles, but they never do much damage.

Good luck with your garden this year. Oh by the way, if you don't have enough squash bugs to go with the bean beetles I'll send you a few. Big Grin

kb8wbe,

Remay (or other brand row covers) can be purchased in varying lengths and widths through catalogs. Local stores usually have only one or two lengths w/standard widths. But, you could reverse them, laying them across the width of the bed instead of along the length. Just make sure the two pieces are attached securely where they meet.

Also as has been mentioned on other threads about row covers, sheer curtains can be used in a pinch or any length of sheer fabric.

Maybe this pic from my garden might be of some interest:

Thanks for the photo gardenz. I think I will do some further research. I am thinking I could build some type of framing system it is just a matter of cost effectiveness I suppose.
