This is in the bed I made for my watermelon.

It looks like some kind of ground nest, but what are everyone else's opinion?

Thanks!

The little pile of seeds/pits near the entrance hole leads me to believe it's a rodent nest of some kind.

Have you seen any bee-like critters entering or leaving the hole? Because sometimes ground-dwelling bees will take over an abandoned rodent nest. Yellow-Jacket wasps in particular.

I doubt it's a Bumblebee nest though, as they prefer better fortified surroundings. Around here the Bumbles are most likely to be found at the base of rock walls or wooden wall retainers.

If you haven't seen anything flying in/out, then I'd assume it's just an abandoned rodent den & till it under.

Ok awesome... we have a ton of "old" rodent life on all levels in this area so I think you may be right. We have rat bate stations set up around the perimeter of the house.

My garden that I started this February has a diverse ecosystem of insects and I am seeing alot of different kinds of bee's (no leaf cutter) and wasps (no hornet).

I am going to leave it because I cant think of anything that would make that harmful.

In this area I doubt that its rodent den though because I dug tilled and supplemented the soil in spring.

Those kindof look like egg casings to me. Looks like a few of them have hatched. Can you tear apart one or two of those round things and see what's inside? Maybe take another photo of a larva up close?

Have you smelled the entrance to the nest? A lot can be surmized by odor. Rat/Mice odors are very strong, and a bee would not go there. A rodent can make a home anywhere he wants to in very short order, especially if it has material at hand to help him. Bumble Bees are active right now, and you would see them coming and going. They prefer a nest site where there is some cover over the entrance.
