Organic Gardening will upgrade its login and registration system on
December 11. The new system is needed to support some of the major site
enhancements that we are currently developing. The new system is shared with
other Rodale sites, including Prevention, Men's Health, Runner's World and Women's Health.

My sister has moved to a new house. The grass looks pretty good so it was likely given something like chem lawn treatments by the previous owner. My sister would like make a vegetable garden. Is this dangerous given the history or prior lawn chemical usage?
In truth? Probably. The average lawn treatment jockey soaks in doses of herbicides that really disturb the Soil Food Web.
Best advice: Raised Beds! Turn sod over, let it compost using layers of b/w newspaper plus any grass clippings and similar organic matter. Earthworms will consume most of the composting materials and neutralize most of the chemical residue. Then place a raised bed on top, fill with good soil and there you go!
