Generic grocery store stuff

Will post pics on the pics thread...DH is going to help me move past my "posting picture phobia"~

This is fun!

I have re-read the garlic instructions and they are wonderful. I have another question. I don't have the ideal drying situation. I have 2 options- 1) shed- dry, but hot & humid. 2) indoors- but I harvested about 10 bulbs yesterday and brought them inside and the smell is so strong I don't think I can dry all of it in here. Will they do okay in a 100 degree shed in NC humidity? Thank you!

Barb, I am going to let MHG answer that one. I had some hanging in our spare bedroom and the entire house smelled of garlic. To me, it was great. The aroma diminished after a week or so.

Hi folks....only got a minute or two to cruz the posts.....

Barb - anywhere out of direct sunlight and with any airflow that you can give it will do. I also would recommend that when you hang it not to make the bundles too big ( as in the number of garlics ) to help keep from trapping air moisture in the bundles.

Dave - glad u're keeping this going.....I'm way too busy to spend as much time as I'd like to here....why don't weeds need sunshine to proliferate....and why don't they just drown like everything else is trying too....?!!?

Howdy MHG, I am glad to help out. Are you drying out at all yet? I discovered why some of my garlic isn't as great as it could be. Due to all the space I needed, some varieties are planted in clay. Not good. The susanville is one of them. That can't be helping the mosaic virus problem.

...my last hit for the night....

Dave, true the clay isn't optimum, but you may find that although they give a smaller bulb, it will probably be denser ( as in not as much water content ) thus having a longer shelf/storage life and a deeper/richer flavor. Crossing my fingers for ya.

No, we're not any drier yet, and I'm seeing soil compaction due to the heavy deluges. I can tell already that when things start to really dry out it's gonna crust over something fierce.

Tip of the Day - For those of you who are letting your scapes go full-term and flower, as soon as you are done admiring them, cut the flower heads off and dry them, then seperate out those seeds......they are little nuggets of garlic heaven. I like them for cooking even better than the scapes themselves. Smiler

Gotta thank our Lisaann too, for keeping things bumped up in our absence. Wink

MHG,

It sure is good to see you on the garlic threads. We have missed you terribly!

It won't be long now till alot of us start digging! I can hardly stand the wait!

Well, keep us updated with the disaster out there in Iowa.

Thinking of your compacted, crusty soil and crying for you.

Maybe it won't be as bad as you think.

K now y'all are gonna have to school me on the art of garlic growing next season.

I *love* garlic but have I ever grown it? No!

I'm at yer mercy Wink

Harvest

O, fruit loved of boyhood! ..the old days recalling,
When wood-grapes were purpling and brown nuts were falling!
When wild, ugly faces we carved in its skin,
Glaring out through the dark with a candle within!
When we laughed round the corn-heap, with hearts all in tune,
Our chair a broad pumpkin, our lantern the moon,
Telling tales of the fairy who travelled like steam
In a pumpkin-shell coach, with two rats for her team!
