I have tomato vines (German Johnson) going yellow and fingerling potatoes wilting at ground level then moving up the stem. The stems will easily separate at ground level if pulled. Some are wilting some are not. This is an old tobacco field and just a few plants right now. I have later tomatoes growing for market and can't afford to lose those vines. What can I do? Thanks a ton, Carol
I don't know how old your old tobacco field is, but unfortunately soil where tobacco has grown can harbor a number of wilt-producing viruses that also attack tomatoes, potatoes, eggplants, etc., etc.
Some sources claim you can help prolong the life of affected plants by spraying them with milk, but I have no first-hand experience with that & would probably want to have more information before I started spraying milk all over the place.
Sorry - but you might not have a lot of luck growing plants that are susceptible to tobacco diseases in that field.

These fields haven't had tobacco in at least 25 years. This is a bump. I'm looking for things to do to succceed. Surely, these fields can be reclaimed. Anyone ever solarize a plot? How did it turn out? Thanks, Carol
