Organic Gardening will upgrade its login and registration system on
December 11. The new system is needed to support some of the major site
enhancements that we are currently developing. The new system is shared with
other Rodale sites, including Prevention, Men's Health, Runner's World and Women's Health.

Fertilize with a good organic fertilizer in the fall.
Next overseed your lawn with grass seed. Make sure you follow the directions about fertilizing and seeding timing and make sure you seed early enough for the grass to establish before the first killing frost if applicable.
Once the new grass is established and before the first killing frost either rent of hire somebody to aerate your yard.
When we first moved here, the weeds and grass were over a foot tall. Mowed it down. The next year there was considerable improvement. We raked the inital mess. Then let leaves and grass lay where it fell and it turned out really nice.
Depends what kind of lawn you want, if you want it totally weed-free or not. We don't care about the weeds as long as it's green. It's ridiculous to try to have a weed-free yard in the country. So for winter, we just let the leaves fall where they will and leave it.
