here in salem oregon, willamette valley, we've not had frost yet, although 36º has been seen. I have lettuce starts in containers, just watching and taking notes. My spinach is still goin' (also in a container), the fennel or dill (dont remember what it was I planted) is still going, I'm growing it as micro greens anyway = also in a container!

I just did a survey of my garden. I just have the mustard and miscellaneous greens left and what I have in pots.

But it is supposed to not freeze anymore for the next week. Yep, it froze here the day after my birthday! Earlier than it has frozen for a while. I guess we are going to have an Indian Summer.

Our TV folks announced that it was the end of the growing season.

Our first frost is averaged around the middle of October, but we have yet to see any real cold temperatures (real cold to us that is!!) Looking at the 10 day forcast, it's still not getting below the upper 40's.

On Nov. 18th of last year, we had our first snow flurries & snow squalls of the season.

This year, Nov. 18th was cloudy & in the mid 60's.

Last year we got a foot of snow on November 6th and we didn't see ground again until the middle of April. Yesterday, it was 50 here. Cool

Minnie, we often have frost in mid to late October--but usually only for a couple of mornings, then it warms up and gives us several more weeks of "Ocotober" days--warm, sunny days and cool nights, with occaisional rainy or windy "cold" days before clearing off and sometimes getting hot again and sometimes cooler. (Last week it was in mid 70's, rain came in Tuesday and it's been in the low 60's for high temps since.) Weather here--especially in spring and fall--is basically "If you don't like the weather, hang around for about 15 minsutes, it'll change".

I remember back in the early 80's, when I started my garden at this house, the normal average frost date was 10-7 to 10-10. If we got it much later, we were lucky! And, you know those seeds that say plant "as soon as the ground can be worked"? That was usually around 3-15 to 3-20, and once it was well into April before I could stick a shovel into the ground! Now, I can't remember the last time the ground froze really well, and this year I haven't had a frost, only one freeze - 28º on 11-8 - when I covered my peppers and lemongrass, which was the only night I had to, and they are still living!

Really strange weather...

Dave
