Hi! I'm new to the forum (and to vegetable gardening)and have felt like a kid in a candy store! There is so much wonderful information here. I logged on because my husband brought home Mel Bartholomew's Square Foot Gardening book from the library. From the previous posts I've seen here, it sounds like the method really works! My big concern is how I can adapt these growing techniques to my garden. I live in the southwestern desert at about 3200-feet and my area has a growing season starting in mid-February through the end of October (sometimes into early December). Has anybody had any experience using the square-foot garden in an area like this? :^O

I've got no information for you, but wanted to say welcome.
I hate seeing '0' in the replies column, and am bumping this question back up to the top of the page.
I would guess that the square foot method would work well no matter where you are gardening.

Welcome Alisun! I would imagine square foot gardening would be ideal with your long growing season. When one crop is finished, you can just put another in it's square. Being able to garden that many months of the year has got to be wonderful.

Welcome here. I live just north of Sacramento. I use the square foot system to an extent in my 3X6 raised beds. It works for me but I don't get as precise or particular as Mel. Any gardening can be done in square foot measures & methods. I sort of blend lazagna & square foot in my raised beds.

Hi, and welcome!

Look up above the messages and you'll find the search feature. If you do a search on square foot gardening, you'll be able to read the experiences others here have had with it.

I would use sunken beds rather than raised beds in your climate. Mel has a website with more info. I use a lot of square foot techniques along with whatever I try that works. Don't get stuck on any one method; just learn from everybody.
