Maggots are gross. Bleah. I'm pretty sure lots of critters love to eat them, though. And did you know they can be used in forensic detective work? Apparently, the stage of insect larvae in a corpse can help detectives determine how long the body has been dead. Wouldn't you love to be the intern who has to collect the larvae samples? (Why don't we have a nauseous emoticon?)
I don't think anyone knows all the purposes of any given creature in the web of life. All we know for sure is that every time we wipe out one species, it has a chain reaction effect on all the other creatures in the ecosystem.
I *do* wish whoever designed this place had thought to make some of the bit players a little less repulsive, though. I mean, who thought up the slug???

EEEWWWWWWW!
Guess I'll have to try the scissor method this year, and just let the kids know NOT to use THOSE scissors for anything else! Vicki
I would usually cut slugs in half when I found them when I was out deadheading my flower gardens. I'd just let the bodies stay where they fell. This is really gross, but I had this really stupid dog who would follow me around in the garden and pretty soon we would notice that he seemed to be having some kind of trouble with his mouth and discovered that it was practically glued shut with the slugs he was trying to eat!!! Even grosser was trying to clean his mouth out. Fixed that problem by not letting him out when I cut up slugs. He was a weird dog. Used to spin around in tight circles when he got happy and excited, and usually managed to end up in a doorway and smack his head on the jamb. And continue to do so all day long. Vet was not kidding when she agreed that he probably brain damaged himself after years of doing that. LOL LOL LOL
Someone told me that slugs do not like to crawl over human hair. It hurts their skin. I've used it to keep slugs off young plants. It works pretty well. I've used it around the base of dahlias that are just starting to come up to protect the young, new growth from the slugs.
Since I cut my guys' hair at home, I usually had a plentiful supply, and if I ran low, well, somebody just was letting their hair get too long and needed a trim.
Most beauty shops will be happy to give you a bag full of hair, it you don't have a source at home.

I've also heard that slugs do not like to cross copper. Seems it has a slight electrical charge and works just like an electrified fence. I've never tried it, tho I hear you just lay copper wire around the area you want to protect. I now prefer to use barrier methods rather than kill them outright. Don't know why exactly. Maybe I'm more Budhist than I know!
