If the pear comes easily loose from the tree, they are ready. If you pick with the gesture as if you were cocking back a handgun to blow the smoke off the barrel, like in the cowboy movies, not a downward pull, they should disconnect. I've noticed on mine the skins get a little darker looking the more they sit there. They hold on the tree well, but you don't want the skins to get too tough.
