I have been picking one or two of my squash for meals for the past two weeks and they are great. My question is ----when do I pick all of them or do they stay in the garden until very late? The plants are done producing as I haven't seen any new green squash in awhile. Also I have put lots of fall leaves on my beds for winter----should I mow them to shred or leave them intact? Thanks for your advice!
I pick mine when the vines start dying back, mainly to keep the squirrels from gnawing holes in them. I have left them out til after the first frost. If you plan to store them, let them sun dry for a few days, til the stems are completely dry.
Mowing your leaves will help them break down quicker. I never do, lack of time.
