I was wondering just how many really weird methods are out there for supporting our sun flowers.
It would be fun to git a list of all the ways people have tried.
I'll start with the first one.
I took 20oz plastic pop bottles and cut the top and bottom off and took the middle part and cut up the side. did this to two bottles and tied twine to form a sling. I used two slings one hoilding it to the right and the other to hold it to the left. It was weird but worked.
I love trying things others would be caught dead trying.

I used 1/2" bamboo poles, but they proved to be too short. The sunflowers grew 2 or 3 feet above the top of the poles. While they would have held them up undisturbed, birds (I'm assuming - I didn't actually observe the offenders) attacked the seed heads and bent each and every stalk right above the supports. Lesson learned... next year, I won't plant sunflowers!

I do wonder how commercial growers deal with it though. Surely they can't be staking up every plant, and those seed heads can get pretty heavy, even without the extra weight of a ravenous bird.

Last bed of Mammoth suns I grew reached about 10 feet tall with some stalks 2" across. They all started to lean this way and that as the heads grew heavier until I tied them loosely together in groups of three or four.

That did the trick. They held each other up.
