Notice: The 2008 garlic contest will close on September 15th. All entries must be submitted by that date.

Well, here we go. I am only a month late starting this thread, but let's get going.
I will edit this on the fly, but felt we needed to get started. Anybody that is growing garlic and wishes to join our contest and whose name isn't in the list below, email me at: oh2flyatclearwiredotnet (change the at to @ and dot to.)
There are judges and sponsors in place already
Major, pepperjr, pogo and prairiemom are going to be our judges and I thank all of you for helping out. Prairemom will handle the People's Choice pic thread for that category. The others will judge all the bulbs grown for size
Sponsors are our own magazine Organic Gardening and Territorial Seed Co. OG is donating books to the winners, courtesy of Scott Meyer and Territorial is giving away gift certificates. Details to be announced later. We thank the sponsors for helping us out in this fun contest.
Rules: TBD
Dates: TBD
Judges: Major, pepperjr, pogo and prairiemom (PC)
Here are the entrants so far:

We need to get the entrants in the correct categories. So, when you know which variety ( softneck or hardneck, or elephant) let us know. We all are eligible for PC, so no need to post that. I am letting the judges decide how we measure them. It has been suggested to use a cloth tape and post a pic of the tape around the bulb. I am also wondering if there should be a 4th category for anyone growing my Rocco strain. Just a thought, but if those bulbs from us are in the 4" range and all the other hardnecks are in the 3" range or under, it doesn't seem quite fair, does it? As always, in our democratic garlichead community, your ideas and suggestions are welcome. Big Grin
Garlic on and good luck to all! Remember to take pics before it's all dug up if you are considering the People's Choice category. That one isn't about size, but beauty, good composition, imagination, humor or whatever else floats your garlic boat.
I am not sure I have all the judges email addresses. If you would all please email me with garlic contest as the subject I will start a new folder and we can work out all the details. It is getting exciting, isn't it? I peeked at another bulb last night and it was like sneaking a peek at a present under the tree and carefully re-taping the package. Not that I would ever do that Razzer

Weeeee! I only planted hardneck "Music" and some elephant. I've got just 1 elephant so far that's worthy of the name....but TONS of Music that's doing great. Those would be the categories to enter me into.

I planted what bluestreak sent me, which I think was elephant and hardneck (Blue?) I have two elephant with scapes and six hardneck(?) and one mystery plant which may be garlic and if so, would be the hardneck. Everything is smaller at altitude, so I'm not worrying about competing, so much as proud to be entered with this fine group of gh's.

I grew no elephant garlic this year, so I will enter a softneck, and a hardneck...no Rocambole.

Since my neighbor thinks my garlic bed looks like a corn field, Eeker I definitely think I should enter the people's choice division. Aside from that, I planted mostly hardneck and a few softneck as an experiment. Time will tell what actually makes bulbs. We haven't even "scaped" yet up here!

It's a clove seperation failure at planting time, Dave.....Wink
Actually, it's where two cloves are in one skin, thus at planting time you think you are planting one clove, but have actually put two in the ground. ( page 70 of your "bible" )

Time to crash, see ya's tomorrow nite....maybe.
