Thanks for the great advice, the way the beds are laid out I can access it from all sides. Plus I've got age (and youthful stubbornness) on my side, I'm a 24 year old bone head, but I think three feet from either side shouldn't be too bad. When I laid it out I could reach the middle and dig with a trowel without any trouble.

First off...WELCOME! I too plant in raised/containers....I only get a small bit of veggies and herbs, but I LOVE it! My Dad built me 2 boxes - probably only 3 ft x 5 ft, plus we have 3 whiskey barrels, and assorted large pots for the herbs. It has worked out very well. I'm learning each year, as we go...and the folks here are extremely helpful, patient and friendly. Keep checking back and asking questions, as well as keeping us up to date on what you're doing! We love pics!

hmm... Whiskey Barrels for herbs, thats a great idea, wonder if I can buy them full and empty them my self Smiler

Everyone here seems to have a wealth of knowledge, I've been reading through posts and everyone seems supper helpful. I'm trying to learn as much from my grandfather as possible. He grew up farming from the age of 6. They lived on a tobacco farm and then grew vegetables for their everyday meals. He and my grandma are teaching me the ins and outs of growing your own food and storing it so it lasts all winter. Even my wife is starting to get involved. I'm actually just taking a break from building the 12x6 box to post this and get a drink. I'll take some pictures and post them once I'm done.
