Does anyone know about the "self" watering hanging baskets, planters and pots?
They water from the bottom up. My question is about marigolds in those containers. I've heard that marigolds suffer easily from root rot. I'm concerned if they are getting water at their roots they will rot. I'd hate to invest in those planters if they aren't going to be good for my plants.
Any suggestions? By the way, I first found those self watering window boxes and planters and hanging baskets on an internet site. They are expensive, $37.00 for a large window box and the baskets aren't much cheaper.
While shopping at Walmart the other day I found the exact same self watering planters for $5.00 each. the large planter went for $7.00 each (a far cry from $37.00). I couldn't believe that a garderner's site would so blatently rip off their customers!
sorry, I didn't mean to get on my soap box but thought someone might want to know where to get them "dirt" cheap.
Hi grace, the only plant I have grown in such a pot is a fern, and that was the only pot I've ever had success with a fern before. There's no problem with the roots rotting as you don't pour water on the roots, such pots have a little spout you fill, and that puts water into the reservoir on the bottom. Just be sure to not let it go dry, as the plant gets used to the moist environment, and in time even sends a few roots into the water (I had a pot that had a clear bottom so I could see if it was dry, and also see the roots).
