I know House Bill 875, also called the Food Safety Modernization Act of 2009, is upsetting a lot of organic growers.

But in many cases, the the people sounding the alarm haven't even read the bill. I'm a newspaper reporter by profession and dasd looked into it a few weeks back.

I'm not saying it's good, just that it's not nearly as bad as it's been made out to be.

Andrew-DocHolliday2006, I emailed you information breaking down the latest food Bills and will send more if needed.

Below is from Alex Tiller. He runs a national farm management company.

"the bill as it stands would be a terrible idea, one that does nothing to enhance food safety but instead makes it impossible for small producers to compete with the big companies, often imposing what amounts to de facto bans on organic produce or naturally-gathered food and game. "

And this is from LeaveMyFoodAlone.org:
"HR 875, in its current form, the bill could prevent small local organic farms and community gardeners from growing and selling you nutritious, truly fresh, organic produce. It would crush our small local food producers by imposing heavy government regulation that only large corporations could adhere to."

While a lot of people may not have read all of HR 875, you can count on most of congress to not do so either. I HAVE researched HR 875 and find it will NOT solve any food safety issues, but WILL increase the market share of those responsible.

After spending much time researching food Bills HR 875, S510, HR 814, HR 759 and both sides of the latest "food safety" issues, it becomes clear it is not the small organic farms which are responsible. The latest rash of food bills do NOT support organic farming or gardening and will put many small farms out of business and add to the acreage of large industrialized (GMO) farms.

Let me add a little perspective:
Over one million Americans have been killed by Big Pharma in the last decade. Tens of millions have been seriously injured.

Scientists within the FDA are routinely pressured to alter science to fit administrative and bureaucratic priorities. Major funding to the FDA comes from drug companies, who negotiate how they will be regulated. This information gets very little mainstream media coverage.

A handful of people die from salmonella or are sickened by E.coli and this is front and center and repeated over and over by mainstream media. The salmonella and E.coli comes from the large industrialized food processing and not the small farms, but we now have "food safety" Bills which would give a clear advantage to these same larger players and hurt the small farmers. Scare the public and thus push for "food safety standards" to be set. Paul Turner
