This is too weird.
"Chinese families who can afford it opt for foreign-brand toys even if they are made in China."
They figure that toys made in foreign-run factories, even if located in China, adhere to higher standards of safety. So even tho these products cost more, if parents can afford it, they buy them.

Geesh! What does that say about the Chinese regulators or whoever makes these decisions?!

It's ok to poison the poor kids with lead paint?

no, it's totally disgusting that ANYONE has to be poisoned with lead paint!!

About Chinese families buying foreign, it seems similar to American families buying Japanese cars b/c they are better made, or HABA blocks b/c they're good quality, etc.

Just as Americans don't all support George Bush, I'm certain that most Chinese people in China (or elsewhere)do not feel good about this crap being sent to America and making kids, animals, etc. sick.

Like many money-grubbing corporations in ANY country, it's about the bottom line. Unfortunately, in China, regulations have been way too loose. However, we all know that China is under such a microscope these days that hopefully practices will be changing.

I believe regulations/punishments in China have been become so stringint that execs are quaking in their boots, and several factory bosses and managers have committed suicide rather than face the consequences of what they've allowed to happen.
