Hi Connie:
You can grow anything in straight compost. Are you producing your own? After 8 years, I am still frankly amazed how garden waste, kitchen left overs and lawn clippings turn into the right stuff that makes my garden happy. I would steer clear of leaf mold until after the grass is growing well, though, because leaves produce a different set of bacteria and are sometimes a problem. But, if you're starting your grass in the spring, and leaf mulch is all you have, spread it over the area you are going to plant in grass this fall, let it winter over, turn it into the soil in the spring and plant away!
Happy gardening, Donna
