What a shame. For me at least, U.S. farmed catfish were/are the only farmed fish I'm comfortable consuming. From today's New York Times:

A small price to pay so feed crops can more rightfully be used to fuel Hummers that suburban accountants in Massachussets require to drive across town to buy a six-pack and feel like real men.
So you have to give up a food source. Big deal. Stop your whining. Would you rather have those with overpowered, gas-guzzling vehicles have to give up their manhood? Let's get our priorites straight. Wayne "If women don't find you handsome, they should at least find you handy." |

That is pretty sad. Too bad there isn't another local, affordable way to feed those fish.

The few people I know who have catfish ponds do not rely on the ponds for their main source of income so they haven't been forced to close their ponds yet. The ponds are also open to the public, where you pay a certain fee for the amount you catch. It's the most fun you can have fishing--you are almost guaranteed to catch something and you don't have to wait too long to do it!

Why, please, if people are hungry in this country and food is so expensive, are we EXPORTING grain (and petroleum! and coal!) to Asia?

I would never buy farm raised fish anyway but then, I can walk over to the lake 8 blocks from home and catch my own fresh fish.

Wow...some great catches Major! You are very lucky to have such a wonderful and close supply of fresh fish. I've got nothing in my area. (close and affordable anyway) And yes, I avoid farm raised fish like the plague. |

allenwrench,
Here is my favorite fish to eat, Walleye. When I retired I found the place that had the cleanest water and most fish in my state and that's where I settled. If you are ever going to be in Washington State and have some extra time let me know and I will take you out and we will catch a few fish for you too. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ LAUS DEO, Where ever I go, there I am. ..... major at nwi dot net .....
