The many-headed chemical hydra has wrapped its tentacles around another major seed supplier, De Ruiter Seeds. De Ruiter is a global vegetable seed supplier of what are known as "protected seeds" or seeds primarily used by greenhouse growers. http://monsanto.mediaroom.com/index.php?s=43&item=586

"And ye shall know [the Devil] by His mark"... That'd be "M" for Monsanto. Mad

Time for prayers on the eve of Earth Day Frowner We can only hope it flunks the pre-purchase inspection.

Muddy knees David! Compost is my friend. Every day I enroll in gardening school. Some days it feels like kindergarten!

Monsanto...I hate em.

On another note...

Are the seeds greenhouses get of different quality than they sell to the masses? The stuff I buy at Walmart and Lowes has low germination and seems to yield so-so results. (But I must say I am a beginner, so it may be me.)

Aside from the fact they they're now sharing the same 'seed bed' w/Monsanto, all I know of the company is that they sell only to the greenhouse trade and only sell hybrids. My sense is that because of who their customers are, their seeds most likely require a higher germination rate than those sold in Lowes or Walmart. Roll Eyes

Thanks for that reference Maggie, I'm going to look it up.
Also, altho probably everybody on here knows the story of Percy Schmeiser, the farmer who took on Monsanto and won, I link below to it.
He is such an inspiration.

"Saskatchewan Farmer, Percy Schmeiser, spent between 1998 and 2004 standing up to one of the most influential agricultural companies in the world - Monsanto. While it was Monsanto that took Schmesier to court on that occasion, the roles were reversed on Wednesday March 19, 2008, when Monsanto found itself being taken to court by Schmeiser. "
