"ST. LOUIS - Under increasing criticism, the LPGA Tour on Friday backed off a proposed policy that would have suspended players who could not efficiently speak English."

According to The American Heritage Dictionary

efficient = 1. Acting or producing effectively with a minimum of waste or effort. 2. Exhibiting a high ratio of output to input.

The speaking of ENGLISH in this country is a VERY volatile subject with me. If you don't care to learn it - go back where you came from.

But you know what Dirt? I really & truly believe this is a political subject that has nothing to do with the environment or organic gardening, so we should probably let it be. Wink

Hi Breezy-

One can be a grammarian with out being political, efficiently or not. I saw a sign recently that read:

AIN'T BROKE
DON'T FIX

Lousy but efficient English, therefore approved by the LPGA?

"At the current rate of flow this particular section of the near North-End storm drainage structure known commonly as 'Holden's Ditch' or more technically as SWDDN1 has sufficient capacity to carry any probable quantity of so called 'run-off' or 'storm water' for the near and foreseeable future. Therefore it is the recommendation of the 'Near North-End Storm Water Run-off Research Committee' that any proposed improvements be tabled for now and any further investigations only be undertaken a minimum of six months in the future. Thank you.

Proper but not so efficient English. Would the LPGA approve?

Or did the LPGA not use the correct term for their purposes?

Or does that dog not retrieve the right duck, Dirt?

Ria

PS I have been using the Shift key too much tonight. Is it a swap-out?

Whose English? The Queen's? The South's? The Chinese?

I'm more concerned that this was an issue for the ELL PGA, not the PGA. Apparently you have to speak English only if you're a woman. Men can hack it up as much as they like.

Are we related? Big Grin

Actually my dig was on the writer of the article. Then again I could be wrong!

No Olympians in the host country if they don't speak the native language?

PGA players play internationally and I'm sure they don't speak Arabic or Spanish efficiently" and certainly not the Queen's English for the British Open.

Hmmm, is the LPGA rules committee being "efficient" in their rulings?

Stupidity run rampant!

I called for a comment but wasn't immediately answered.

A lot of native born English speaking Americans can't speak English efficently. Roll Eyes

Sometimes people whose native language is one other than English (Spanish, for example) don't want to speak English even if they know a fair amount of it, because they are afraid of making a mistake; they are afraid of being embarrassed or made fun of.

Excellent point.

Another thing you might notice is that if Americans go to another country (or even here) and attempt to speak in the other person's language, they will welcome and get a kick out of the attempt.

It seems that in America, I notice that when people from other countries attempt to speak English, there's a lot of rudeness and intolerance for improper grammar, wrong vocabulary, etc.

Also, to use my parents as an example (who speak Chinese), they are citizens and have lived in the US for 35 years. You may hear them in the stores speaking in Chinese to each other, but they read, write, speak English fluently. Yes, with accents, but you'd have an accent too if you moved to another country as an adult.

When they are speaking to each other, they will use their native language. It is a part of their culture and their first language. Though they are proud Americans, they are also Chinese Americans, meaning they bridge two cultures, and shouldn't need to give up one for the other.

(I'm not really directing this to anyone. In fact, i've lost track of who's arguing with who. If we're arguing at all).

I think we were all agreeing on the absurdity of the LPGA attempted ruling for "guest visiting" this country.
