No, I don't believe that the intent was only to limit it in the context of elections. For instance, can you discuss any serious issue that has major political divides and not use terms such as "blissninni Democrats" or "slap happy Democrats?" Some people here are incapable of that and incorporate derogatory terms to describe a party that perhaps half the members support. Those individuals seem to feel that, until they are booted from the forum, rules don't apply to them. The rest of us have agreed to abide by our hosts' wishes. Wayne

The ban came about because feelings during the first Bush campaign and election ran so high. It got incredibly nasty on both sides. The same might not have been true for other presidential elections but given the conditions of that one, it was pretty bad. So rather than turn our wonderful organic gardening forum into a big screaming mess, the ban was instituted. As I understand it, the ban applies to electoral politics.

So does that mean it is ok to make derogatory comments about a specific party or person if one is not specifically discussing an election but in the context of a specific issue? If so, there are lots of nasty things I'd like to say about a specific party and certain individuals regarding their positions on a number of issues. Just give me the go-ahead and I'm back in business! Or maybe I'll just go get a beer. Wayne

I have always taken it to mean we can't say stuff like "Bush sux" or "Bush is fabulous." We must not say anything good or bad about McCain or Obama, or talk about who we're going to vote for. Or blame the Republicans or the Democrats for anything. We will stick to garden talk and not mention the current political convention, or the one that recently ended. And in a few short months, the election will be over and done with, for what it's worth. (Hang in there, folks!) --J--

If you follow THIS PART of ellen's thread in Watchdogs to the end, I think you'll get a final clarification of exactly what are The Rules Of Engagement, as instructed by Scott. Just a snip from the last post: quote: Originally posted by: Scott_Meyer: I'm not saying that only facts are acceptable. You are free to express your opinion about the facts, just not to bring office-holders, candidates or political parties into the discussion.
Which, to me, means elections are only a part of off-limit items. Granted a major part. But I'd say that Scott's inclusion of "office holders" in that off-limit list applies to any person presently or formerly in any public office. I guess that means if I want to diss one of my state's Representatives who sits in the House - and not w/the support of my vote - I just have to refer to him as Rep. Doody-Head. That way, it's just a private joke.

Why not get into a tear about Canadian politics?! You could all get the frustration out, and us Canucks, we really don't mind. That's cause we really don't get all tied up in knots about politics like you guys do. And believe me, we have real lulus up for the top job too. We're following your political stories, it's about time you peeked in on the drama up here. Just take a look at Harper (incumbent Progressive Conservative - most like a Republican), Stephan Dion, Liberal (like a Democrat, but also a Republicanish touch) who has no clue whatsoever and, although many don't want Harper in again, the Dion alternative is akin to madness. NDP, (New Democratic Party), formerly the working class' hero, now just another Liberal party with a different name, with the most gorgeous Jack Layton at it's helm. Lots of minor party fluffabouts to sneer at as well!
We're having an election too, supposed to be getting the news from the Governor General anytime now. Go for it! Cut them to shreds. We don't mind at all! Your last elections was terrible on these boards, we lost a lot of really good garden people that haven't been back. And I hate it when we're all fighting; I never know what's going on.
