This year we have so many wine berries growing around the yard and not sure what to do with them. I don't want to make wine, but is there any other uses for them. I picked some the other day and mixed in a little suger and froze them waiting to figure out just what to do with them. I'm going out to pick a few more this morning before the birds get to them. Anyone with any ideas. ty

I so envy you!!!!

I miss Wine Berries, having grown up with them in abundance back on Long Island, NY. Those fuzzy, spiny red stems & those rich red soft berries.

Have never made or heard of actually making wine from them, but enjoyed them in every other way berries are enjoyed. Out of hand, on cereal, in crisps/cobblers/crumbles/pies, etc. You can use them in virtually any recipe that calls for raspberries.

I've been told they can be found in some parts of VA, but I haven't come across any yet. Am thinking that once we set aside some of our property for bramble fruits, I might have to plant a few just for old times' sake.

BreezyGardener, Tell me how to transplant and ship them and I would be happy to send you some. We have so many I can spare a few.

What a sweet offer! Smiler

But I wouldn't have you go to all that trouble until I have a dedicated spot for them.

We bought our 21-acre farm as a "fixer upper", & that "fixing-upping", as usual, is taking a lot longer than we anticipated - lol!! But when I'm ready, I'll certainly keep your extra Wine Berry plants in mind.

Again - thanks! Smiler

What the heck is a Wine Berry? I've never heard of a berry by that name before. I have however, made wine from black berries and raspberries before.

It's like a raspberry with more sweetness & depth. Much, much more perishable too, as the berries are softer.

I could be wrong, but I don't think it's found much, if at all, on the west coast. It prefers consistently moist soil & dappled shade - at least that's where we always found the best stands of it back in NY.

Here's a link with a pic:

I am in independence,va and have found lots of wine berries around the new river.I would look around the river as they seem to favor moist spots to grow.
