So, I don't can, and I have a peck of pears that ripened much faster than I thought they would. What can I do with them? Does anyone have recipes for breads, muffins, or sauce? I have freezer space but I don't can so any ideas would be appreciated.

Dried pears are the best! We have 2 pear trees, I dry lots of pears, they're great.

Instead of applesauce, make pearsauce. I did that with my asian pears. They freeze well.

If they were mine I'd divide them up. Some I'd cut up and "flash freeze" on cookie sheets, then bag them for smoothies and desserts later. Some I'd dehydrate.
Also I'd make a cobbler or two - they are so simple and so satisfying. I'd also puree some of the riper ones to serve over ice cream and other desserts. Ditto Lilyrose - you can sub pears in just about any apple recipe. |

I made pear jam and it was REALLY GOOD. I did can mine, but you could make freezer jam instead. The recipe I used was just the one that came with my no-sugar needed fruit pectin. I believe it had freezer jam recipes in it as well. VERY yummy, and great because it doesn't need much sweetener added.

In the blender (vitamix)
4-6 pears a tray of ice cubes 1-2 cups parsley It is amazingly refreshing! I did NOT think I would like this at all, it is now a favortie. |

It does take a bit of time to process using the plunger. Adding water makes it easier, but I try to avoid that so the blender can liquify the ice a bit and get the parsley and pears really smooth.

Oooh, I so wish I had your problem!!
Both our pear trees when we lived in the mountains & the one pear tree we inherited with our current farm succumbed to the dreaded Fire Blight. The summer heat & humidity here just isn't kind to pears. My favorite way to enjoy them? One or two nice ripe sliced pears accompanied with a good quality bleu cheese (Gorgonzola, Maytag - any favorite so long as it's at room temp & not overripe), & a nice glass or two of Ruby Port wine. In a couple of months, a nice fire going will nicely complete that picture. |

A good, sharp cheddar goes well with them too, Breezy!
Baked pears are delicious as well--and overripe isn't a problem that way--I like mine with a bit of cinnamon or nutmeg and/or a mild cheese like Edam or Gouda slightly melted over them just before they come out of the oven. If you do freeze/dry whatever, you can take the cores and peels and cook them with just a small amount of water and sugar until they are the consistency of thick syrup or honey and make an excellent pancake syrup. (you can use an apple jelly recipe and leave out the pectin--or I suppose leave it in for jelly) A vegetable garden feeds the body while a flower garden feeds the soul. MsT-Bird that Vitamix is one great product isn't it. A product demonstrator was showing it at Costco and asked how I liked it. I told her that if they offered to give me my money back I wouldn't part with it.
