This is off topic but I thought someone who does crafts might be able to help me. I need to replace the decorative caning on a dining room chair. Has anyone done this. If so, can you give me any advice on "how to" and where to find supplies. If you found it too hard or frustrating, let me know that too. Thanks! Michelle

I haven't done this, but have always wanted to. Check in the back of any woodworking magazine for places that handle the supplies, there are always a ton of adds for that sort of thing. Let us know how it turns out for you.

It just so happens I do chair caning. If you look at the back of your chair and see holes with the cane comming through them you will have to do the seven step method- very time consumming but relaxing. If you have a solid back and a spline going around your cane in a crevice, you can buy the cane already woven and put it in by the whole piece. My dining chairs have the cane that is woven in small squares instead of the circles and this can also be bought already woven. I buy my supplies from Marietta, GA. It used to be Furniture Care but they changed the name, I'll have to find the book to get the new name. I will be happy to get the info for you if you would like it.

Thanks Owl. I'd love the information. I have the kind where there is a crevice and a piece of caning that apparently goes into the crevice to hold the cane in place. Any advice you can give me would be greatly appreciated. Michelle

mb, Sorry I haven't gotten back to you but I have been away for a few days. I'll find that catalogue in the next few days and get the info to you. Just be sure to soak everything before you try to put it in the groove. I have a few special tools but a cloths pin (spring type) with the spring taken off works well, it seems to be the right size to fit in the groove. Just push the cane into the groove with it, put some wood glue in the groove after the cane and then put the spline in. A flat piece of wood is good to use to force the spline in the groove. Just lay the flat wood on the spline and gently hammer on the flat piece of wood. I am not sure I am explaining this very well. Maybe there is a good web site with pictures. I don't know anyone better for finding information than gardens.

mb, I have tried to cut and paste a great site to you for supplies and wonderful instructions but for some reason I can't do it. The site is Furniture Knowledge. I hope you don't have trouble finding it. Maybe someone can tell me how to copy a site and paste it so I can post it and all you have to do is click on it .
