Hey There. I am sort of getting tired of paying $5 a tube or bottle of shaving cream that doesn't have nasty chemicals in it. Anyone know of a natural shaving cream recipe or an alternative to shaving cream? Please and thank you!

Aloe Vera will work. It also soothes the skin.

Make or select a plain old bar soap that has or abstains from using stuph. They still make shaving brushes. Trim your soap to fit a single use (as in only you) cup.

It worked for your great grandfather, it'll work for you.

If you're trying to find a shaving cream that doesn't aggravate acne, I suggest you switch from razor to electric shaver. It's the abrasions of the razor blade on the face that inflame the skin, whereas the foil of a shaver doesn't do anything quite so traumatic.

My brother's acne died back within a week of switching from blade to shaver. IF that's the reason you're looking...

Otherwise: shaving brush and bar soap.

I actually wasn't thinking about that... Hmm... But I think I'll consider that...

Chris, when I shave, I use whatever soap's in the dish. It's almost always Loamy's handiwork. I believe shaving soap is pure castile, though: the olive-oil based one. The reason the brush is there is because that's what whips up the lather, instead of sodium lauryl/laureth sulphate (SLS), the coconut-based surfactant (sudser). Like whipping egg whites with a mixer to make fluffy meringue, instead of a fork to make omelettes.

Caveat: Elfie knows pretty words, but not a lot about soap.

You can buy the round bar soap for shaving mugs in Wal-Mart for just over $1. You can also go to a crafts store like Hobby Lobby or Michaels and buy package of glycerine soap chunks, melt them down and add any of your own essential oils or whatever. I pour it into muffin tins and they fit in mugs perfectly. They have some that have aloe and vitamin E already added which would be good for your skin.

Well. I made some Shaving... It's not a cream, or a gel, but it is a liquid! lol. It works really well, despite the fact that I have to apply it every 5 or so shaving strokes. And it smells good to boot!

Anyways, I did make castile soap, but it has been a while (school has taken the wheel, so to speak) since I've made it. But I will check the book.. Just have to find it in my collection. Thanks!

PS: Would Glycerin be considered a super-fatting agent? I know it is a byproduct of the soap making process, but to add it later?

I shave in the shower, by feel, no mirror and usually dont use anything. But then again. Dirt working, dozer operator, backhoe runnin outdoor rugged American male here. Not your usual coat and tie soft skin kinda guy.

I use Men's Stock shave cream by Aubrey Organics and love it. It's chemical-free and totally organic. I love how smooth it leaves my skin - if I use anything else I break out and get razor burn, but not with this. You don't even need aftershave because it conditions the skin so well. It's pricey compared to Barbasol, etc. but I'll gladly spend $6.95 for two or three months of smooth, irritation-free shaves – I don't really want to have to concoct my own.

Have you ever tried using milk? Yep MILK. Milk isn't exactly cheap but you probably need to keep it around anyway for strong bones and teeth.
You can use Dry Milk mixed with water for a face mask.
Milk is good to clean the leaves of house plants, too. GOT MILK?

I have never even thought of that! I think I'll try that when I have to go out or something lol
