Today, I went to the fabric store, bought some pretty narrow ribbon and wove my very first lavender wand!!

It was fun and made the kitchen smell divine. I think they will make lovely presents for Christmas or birthdays.

If amyone is interested, I will (try to!) post a picture and several links to directions on making them.

Peace

Gail

I used to make those. They're lovely, and the scent is wonderful. There are verbal directions on p. 352 of "Rodale's Illustrated Encyclopedia of Herbs", a really useful book. Somewhere I had directions with photos, but can't find it now.

That is a great posting...no need to look much further!

I am still harvesting and making wands, a couple at a time.

Peace

Great ideas from gardenz, but I would still like to see a picture of the finished wands. I must be a little slow- don't have a complete picture.

Hi owl. This isn't a picture of the ones I used to make. But it should give you an idea of how the finished product looks:

Thanks gardenz,
I had a different picture in my head and this clears it all up. None of my lavendar came up but I am going to try again next year. Might have been my seed source, this was the first time I ordered from them- very disappointed.

Very impressive peacegarden! I hope my lavender takes off as I had a temporary setback last year and had to re-plant. I can't wait to have enough to make these, it's been quite a while.

Peacegarden- It looks like you start weaving at the bottom of the flower and work up to the tip. Is that correct?

Hello owlhollow. It's been a while, how's it going?

I found a couple sites with varying instructions, just in case you were interested.

The first one is the one I learned from:
The New Homemaker
Free Nature Crafts
Garden Gate
Basket Makers
Happy Valley Lavender and Herb Farm OOOO! These guys even tell you how to make lavender bath bomz!

Have fun!

Daisy Dew...great web sites...can't wait to make the stuff for the bath...hmmm...I can feel it and smell it now!

Owl, you gather an odd number of stalks, then tie them tightly right under the flower/bud area, leaving a "tail" of ribbon hanging down, and a longer "tail" on the outside to weave with.

Next, you carefully bend the stalks over the flower/bud area, creating a kind of "cage".

Then you just go around the cage over and under, tightening as you go, until you reach the end of the flower/bud area.

Finally, you tie the ribbon ends in a knot (weaving down and up the stem if you like) and tie a bow to end the wand. Admire your work, snip off the ends of the stalks and store somewhere dry.

Does that help, or is it too much information?

Sure hope you have luck getting some lavender going...I have never tried seeds, but am going to make a ton of cuttings from the plants I have.

Have a peaceful day in your garden

Gail
