i'm looking to start a pussywillow grove, now that i'm retired. i'm after cuttings of any and all sorts, pink, black, white, twisted..you name it. i can cover the postage to abbotsford bc, nothing from outside canada will likely live thru the quarantine period...any help, hints, tips..i'd sure appreciate it. thanks...bob
Willows LOVE water, so make sure you're planting them in a damp spot (I bet you already knew that, but just in case you didn't, there you are). Also, they can get big--Gran'pa up in MI has one he planted when Mom was a kid, and it's at least 4' thick, probably closer to 5'(that's about 50 years old). And I know of a person who started a corkscrew willow from a piece in a flower arrangement she was sent, so if anyone you know gets flowers in the near future, take a close look under the guise of admiring them.
Oh, yeah, I'm trying to start camellia cuttings just now--found instructions which said to scrape off a strip of bark on the bottom centimeter or so on either side of the cuttings. I'm thinking that this exposes more of the cambium (the green growing layer just under the bark) and allows for more roots to grow. Willows don't need too much help in the sprouting department, but if it helps them get off to an even better start, why not?
Good Luck!
